The Bella of the Ball

On hand to join in the celebration from top: Buster, Izzy and Brando. Second place finisher Luscus sent a representative to accept his ribbon. At 140 pounds, Luscus thought it best to stay home and not scare the little doggies.
A special thank you to the American Kennel Club and Liz Alfieri from Larchmont Floral Designs/Calling All Dogz for their "in-kind" prize donations.
Now a word about Doggy Beach. Today was my first visit to Doggy Beach. I've noticed it on my running route, but never actually stepped foot in the place. What a wonderful spot for dog owners and their dogs! The word on the street is that VOL wants to clamp down and require dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash. Dogs need a place to run around and play. What's the point of designating a place for dogs if they can't run or swim? There were tons of dogs there today, and they were having an absolute ball playing with one another on the beach. I observed the owners being respectful and cleaning up after their dogs. I don't have a dog in this fight (pun intended), but I think enforcing a leash law on Doggy Beach is just plain dumb.

Bella had fun meeting everyone today and she loves all the doggies and people she got to meet. She's sorry Luscus couldn't make it, but she was happy to meet and play with His Mom who came to get his prize. Bella says thank you to everyone for everything they have done for her and all the other doggies... Ruff Ruff
congratulations, bella!
and thank you LYNDA, for making this little contest into such a successful COMMUNITY event!!
Did Aroma donate any coffee for the attendees on Sunday? Probably not.
8:44 Why dont you get the crap away from us. I dont want to see you everywhere spoiling our fun. You are bound to push the wrong buttons on something someday and you will get whats coming to you.
Actualy 8:44, Aroma was willing to, but I moved the event from town to the beach as to not inconvenience customers.
I had read that the police was at dog beach the other day and had asked people to leave the far side of the beach due to the fact that it's private property. lynda is this true?
as izzy's owner and a frequent visitor to dog beach, i know izzy would be heart broken to find out that she didn't have that area to retrieve her rubber chicken.
I HAD SO MUCH FUN AT DOGGIE BEACH YESTERDAY WITH ALL MY DOGGIE FRIENDS ITS A GREAT PLACE FOR ME TO SWIM AND SEE ALL MY FRIENDS I GO TO THE BEACH ALMOST EVERY DAY WITH MY FRIEND MAX A YELLOW LAB AND MY UNCLE BILL WE HAVE BEEN COMING HERE FOR MANY YEARS AND ITS THE ONLY PLACE FOR US TO SWIM IN WESTCHESTER PLEASE BE RESPONCEABLE IF YOU GO AND RESPECT THE BEACH THANKS TO ALL LOVE BRANDO
Izzy's owner: The Loop reported such an incident with the Police. I'm not sure what area constitutes "Doggy Beach." There certainly seems to be a great deal of confusion about it, and VOL needs to better communicate the parameters. If the far right beach is not part of "Doggy Beach" then there needs to be a sign or roped off area. Does anyone out there actually know the answer?
Well said Lynda. The dog beach is one of the community gems here in Larchmont and it would be a true shame if dogs were restricted to leash. I go every weekend and owners always (and I mean always) clean up after their pets. It is absolutely wonderful to see the dogs enjoying themselves and to visit with all the other owners.
Lynda......Dog Beach is only the beach from the fence on the left to the wall on the right and then straight out to the water. Approximately 50 feet wide. When you walk under the 2 piers, you are on private property. The long stretch of beach past the piers belongs to the Larchmont Shore Club. People have been asked to leave the private property sections on more than one occasion, thus the need for the police to be called.
Thanks 8:28. Now we just need to get the word out. I don't think that all dog owners are aware of that, and I didn't see any sign or roping to indicate that it was private property. I think the town or the Shore Club should consider putting up a "Do Not Trespass. Private Property Sign."
after almost 5 yrs of going to dog beach weekly, that is the first time i've ever heard that stretch of beach is private. never seen any signage indicating so and have never seen or been approached by police. i respect that it is private property but if the beach is not used by the country club or accessible to them, why the issue with dogs playing on it?

The entire stretch has been private for over 100 years. It has only been for the past few years that there has been more than a few people that ever went past Dog Beach proper. Lately there has been 30-40, and more, on the sections of private property. This includes people who bring chairs and coolers. They let the kids splash about in the shallow water. There has been many a fisherman that has fished from the rocks and enjoyed a cold beer or two. The activities have increased 100 fold. There is a high level of exposer to all property owners in respect to liability. That is the main issue....liabiity....and it is private property. I'm sure all of the property owners would respect your property and not tresspass on it, even on the parts that you might not be using.
I've seen people climb on the rocks from Dog Beach (I don't pretend to know where Dog Beach begins/ends) up onto the Shore Club's pier. To answer the question of why a property owner would care, if someone falls off and breaks his neck, you can bet that he is going to sue the property owner.
1:36
That's it in a nut shell. The times have changed and you don't need to break your neck to sue and win a settlement. If one of the dog walkers were to cut open the bottom of a foot, from a piece of metal or a broken bottle, there could be an suit that would need to be defended and the costs associated with that suit. These are the times we live in.
1:36 and 1:59, points well taken. We live it a litigious society and I can fully understand the property owner's concerns. I think better communication to dog owners is needed. Simple signage indicating boundaries would go a long way in solving the problem
Met Bella the other day, what a sweetheart Rottweiler. Good for you Bella and good for the breed.
just curious since i am in no way an expert in law but if the owners of the property posted a sign that said something like "at you own risk" or that they "take no responsibility for injury" would that eliminate risk on their part but still allow people to use the beach?
11:34
I was talking to someone from the Larchmont Shore Club and they said that there will be a sign posted soon. The sign will be on the beach advising that the beach is private property and there is no trespassing allowed. The person said that the club does not want to have any risk of anyone getting injuried. Last weeekend I saw for myself people out on the rocks with their small children and no dog nearby. It looks like people have adopted this area as a public beach for the enjoyment of not just the dogs, but the people as well.
