We Know!
That didn't take long! The new owners of the future gourmet deli put up a bright orange sign announcing their arrival.  No word yet on when they plan to open.

dear KEARNS and THE CATERY:
keep your chin(s) up
WE did it with starbucks
so you guys will be just fine
if you just keep on doing all the same things that you do best!
best luck

Good attitude! Everybody's just got to turn it up a notch. You'd be hard pressed to find nicer people than the Kearns family. And Chris over at the Catery is a native Larchmonter.

I agree with above, nice peeps at KEARNS and CATERY too. Dont forget the place across the street too, the "greenish" place? I predict one of the four wont make it though in 1 years time. Too many places in too close proximity.
Who will it be?

LyndaLarch10538 said...

You are referring to Mango Mix Anon. It's hard to make any predictions without seeing what type of Gourmet Deli is coming in. Time will tell.

True - you're right. Have you been to the new "gourmet" market next to Boston Market yet?

I have only been there once and got a chicken taragon sandwich.

LyndaLarch10538 said...

I saw it. It's not in the best location. Was the food any good?

Anonymous said...

It was tasty. I mean I was driving from the harbor so I stopped in to try it. I wouldn't go out of the way, but worth going in to see I guess if in the area. It is large so they must have a lot of stuff that's good I hope. I just walked around and got the sandwich. I laughed because their FANCY HI-TECH computer (scanned barcode) didnt charge me tax on the sandwich and I know it's taxable.

LYNDA - How long have you been doing this blog BTW.
It's fun to read :)

you might just be fooled. all (4) could actually survive!
how and why: lots of folks around here with lots, and lots, and lots of little ones. so much to do, so little time. this means spending a little more for the privilege of having someone else prepare it for you. as lond as they're all signifcantly diversified, the pie might actually be big enough, and everybody can get their slice

Thanks 2:31...I've been at this for three years. It's grown from a wee little blog amongst friends to a much larger one. Thanks for reading!

Hey anything beats that nasty, dirty Food Horizons. I think an upscale deli is just what this town needs. We could also use a really good sports store like Lulu Lemon (in G'wich)

Ananomont said...

Like this "Anon" pointed out long before, all one need do in Larchmont is nail a hand written sign saying "EATS" on any door in the Village and a line will form there.
Good luck all.

A Bakery on the Palmer side of town would sure be nice. And with the choo choo right there it would make a mint if it had good breakfast stuff.

Anonymous said...

Hope their food is as good as their nice orange sign looks :)

I drive all the way to Scarsdale some nights for food because the nuckelheads here close at 6:00 -unless you want nicky's pizza. Food Horizon is closer to 8:00PM for the deli, but not a big fan!

Anonymous said...

4:46- the 'knuckeheads' as you like to anonymously refer to them, have lives and families too. 12 hr days, 6-7 days a week are enough for most of them. pizza guys generally open for lunch. the rest of us 'knuckleheads' are usually on board by 6 AM. maybe you should move to scarsdale, but my guess is that you probably can't afford it.
instead, you can bitch and moan here as much as you like

Anonymous said...

well 5:18 you got one thing right, I cant afford Scarsdale, nor is it the place I would move to even if money was of no object
However these "knuckelheads" complain about competition yet they close earlier than they should.

GOT IT? They were the ones complaining too!

Anonymous said...

hey 5:38 I agree ::: 5:18 sounds just like Mr. AROMA Coffehead and he closes early too. Starbucks across the street from him, loves it!

Aroma 's going to lose a lot of coffee business to the new "gourmet deli"
No wonder he's crying! people on the way to the train wont wait in line for his brew

Anonymous said...

There was also a request for a special permit to operate a retail food establishment at 157 Larchmont Ave at the same ZBA meeting last Thurs. Wonder where that is and what it will be if it passed????
And Pepe still is trying to bring a Porche dealer to where Meyer VW is/was. Snails pace......wow

5:36 & 5:46 anonymous dumbass
worry about YOURSELF
aroma's open 365 days/yr
the guy's not stressed
so why are you?

Anonymous said...

Why are people obsessing about Aroma? If one does not like him or his coffee or his place, there are plenty of other places to go without the need to make derogatory remarks about Aroma. What purpose does it serve?

okie dokie, AROMA can take any and and all the criticism, and would also like to thank you all for your continued support. as for the subject of competition, we believe it is healthy, and a neccessary component in keeping the strongest businesses healthy and viable. we welcome all the starbucks, dunkins, bakeries and delis with enthusiasm. good for larchmont, good for you, and ultimately, good for us too. customers vote with their feet. we're confident that they will continue to make wise choices as relates to how to spend their hard earned money
thank you.

Ai yi yi...enough of the Aroma banter. It's getting old folks!

As for the permit for 157 Larchmont Avenue, that is the Candy Store that I reported on recently. It's the retail space in between the fabric store and Groove.

Anonymous said...

OH WOW. who would ever think a "candy store" required a retail food permit?
Oh well-good they're strict I guess???

Thanks Lynda

I think parking,or lack there of, is a big issue with that spot for a Deli. I just don't see people going in that direction for lunch. Is it going to be an "eat in" deli or just a pick up? It should plan on opening really early to get the train crowd going to work.

LyndaLarch10538 said...

9:07, don't forget there are all those people in the Washington Square neighborhood living in apartment buildings one block away and walking to town. The Deli, just like its neighbors, will benefit from this crowd as well as the train crowd.

Anonymous said...

true 9:07, there really is zero parking right there for the new spot, but also for the Cattery too!. Only about 7-8 spots across the street near Nicky's. There are Several (9-15?) "shoppers parking" spots down that one way street by Nicky's also, lets not forget--thats not too far!

Anonymous said...

What is wrong with parking a few blocks away on Chatsworth or Larchmont Avenue and getting a bit of exercice?

Anonymous said...

absolutely nothing 9:54 - but history shows that people don't do it. (ie: McDonalds drive thru)

Anonymous said...

Does anyone remember the "Gold Lake Diner"? For the newcomers to Larchmont, it was at Gjoko on Myrtle Blvd and was in a perfect location for all in the apartments nearby. Great food and ample parking. It never understood why they went out of business.

Anonymous said...

11,21 How many years are you going back?

Anonymous said...

He is going back more than 20, prbly like closer to 30

Anonymous said...

If my memory is correct, the original owners of Gold Lake sold it in the mid to late 80's to someone who lived locally. They kept it going till around 93-94.

There was also a lunchinette right next to the Larchmont movie theater for a really short time in the late 90's.

Anonymous said...

Yes- Gold Lake went downhill after it was sold. They had the best hot pastrami.

Anonymous said...

Anybody remember Nielsen's Ice Cream shop on Palmer Ave.?

Anonymous said...

yes... it was on the corner where "Wraps" is i think

Anonymous said...

Nielsen's was also in Scarsdale and Port Chester I think. (They made the ice cream in PC). Scarsdale closed maybe 15-20 yrs ago and PC closed perhaps 10. I know because we used to get ice cream Santas for X-mas there. After they closed we tried to get the molds to make them ourselves but they had multiple offers :)

Anonymous said...

I remember Nielsens. We would walk there in great anticipation. What a pleasant memory.
It was about where the dress shop down form Pink is now, on Palmer.

Anonymous said...

hope the place is classier than its sign!

Anonymous said...

Nielsen's was the last of the real ice cream/soda fountain shops. I still remember the parlor chairs & cafe tables. OK-who remembers Sub-Deb? The place everyone went for their first bra.....OMG!

Anonymous said...

SubDeb!Irecall that place...was it right there too on Palmer?
There was also a kids clothing store, and a bra store there, it had the goofy mannequins in the windows.

Anonymous said...

Remember how the old lady would just walk into the fitting room when you were trying clothes & bras on? She had no respect for privacy but you have to laugh looking back now. I miss the old Larchmont!
