Have you been looking for an opportunity to give back to your community in a way that will show results and give you real satisfaction? Do you have the time to make a difference in the lives of over 5,000 of our local youth?

The Mamaroneck Selection Committee for The School Board is looking for qualified candidates to fill the upcoming vacant seats.

These are trying times and the children and community are looking for your assistance in keeping the Mamaroneck School System on top.

By participating as a School Board Member you will:

- Make a meaningful and measurable difference in the lives of the children in this community.

- Translate your life experience and professional skills to benefit your community.

- Influence how the community's tax dollars are spent.

- Feel the reward of being able to change the lives of our next generation.

Candidates are being sought who are community minded, team players who feel they can bring a unique skill set or perspective to our school system. An ideal board member should be able to understand and discuss large quantities of information, be a team player, and an articulate communicator.

School Board members are district residents who are elected to three-year terms. During the term you will among other duties, work with the Superintendent of Schools to develop district goals, adopt the annual budget, determine timing and sizing of bonds, work on the capital plan, approve teacher tenure requests, approve policy and approve the school calendar. Board members are expected to attend two Tuesday evening meetings and two Tuesday morning meetings a month. Candidates should be community-minded and also have approximately 10 hours a week to devote to The Board.

The application due-date for The Selection Committee’s endorsement is February 17, 2012. LATIMER CALLS
FOR JUNE PRIMARY

For Immediate Release
Thursday, November 17, 2011

New York State Assemblyman George Latimer (Dem-91st A.D.) has announced his support for a June Primary Date in 2012, to satisfy Federal requirements under the Military Overseas Voter Empowerment Act. Over the last few decades, New York State's Primary Date has been held in September, but that date does not provide sufficient time to ensure ballots to military and overseas voters are mailed 45 days prior to an election, as required by the MOVE Act. Technically, an August or July Primary Date would comply with the law, but Latimer stated that "it would be absurd to hold primaries for important state and federal posts in the middle of the summertime. College students are back home in June, and younger students are still in classes in June, thus their parents are still at home. Vacation schedules do not kick in until July - therefore, a June Primary Date guarantees the most convenient time available for the largest number of people to vote in the primaries to be held".

The Assembly, led by a Democratic majority, is expected to support the establishment of a June date, along with most good government and voting rights groups. The Senate majority, led by Republicans, have filed papers in federal court seeking an August primary date.

"The calendar in 2012 will change", noted Assemblyman Latimer, "as mandated by federal law. Let's make the smart move to June, do it quickly, and without the usual hyper-partisan debate".

Protecting New Yorkers From 2012 Tax Hikes

I’m working in Congress to protect hard-working families in New York from unacceptable tax hikes in 2012. Without action in the next few weeks:

· The payroll tax – reduced last year for employees from 6.2% to 4.2% - could revert to its old level, costing Westchester and Rockland County families an average of $1,689 more in taxes. Click here to see how much your taxes would rise.

· And, more middle-class families could be affected by the Alternative Minimum Tax, which was originally intended to ensure the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share, but affects more middle-class families in high cost-of-living areas like New York each year.

These tax increases, which would disproportionately affect New Yorkers, are unacceptable and must be stopped.

Medicare Beneficiaries Paying Less for Prescriptions

One of the most important provisions of health insurance reform for senior citizens was closing the Medicare Part D “donut hole” – the gap between traditional and catastrophic coverage in the program’s prescription drug benefit.

The new 50% discount on prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries in the donut hole has had great results. This year alone, more than 2.65 million Medicare recipients have saved more than $1.5 billion on their prescriptions – an average of $569 per person – while premiums have not risen one penny.

MTA Payroll Tax to be Cut for Small Businesses

The bill passed on Wednesday evening by the State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Cuomo provides tax relief from the MTA payroll tax to small businesses:

Small businesses with annual payrolls less than $1.25 million

are be completely exempt from the MTA tax

Businesses with payrolls between $1.25 million and $1.5 million

will see their MTA rate drop from 0.34% to 0.11%

Businesses with payrolls between $1.5 million and $1.75 million

will see their MTA rate decline from 0.34% to 0.23%.

The threshold for exemption from the tax, based on the level of income of self-employed individuals has been increased from $10,000 to $50,000 annually.

Public elementary and secondary schools, private and parochial elementary and secondary schools, special act schools, charter schools and BOCES

are now exempt from paying the MTA payroll tax
